The Hitzrot House: McKeesport, Pennsylvania

Updated: Jan 24, 2023

Located in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the Hitzrot House was designed by the famous German-American architect Frederick C. Sauer. It was built for Dr. Henry Hitzrot in the sum of $50,000, which today would be equal to well over $1 million. The Mansion was completed in 1892. Dr. Hitzrot and his family enjoyed it until his death in 1906. Five years after the death of Dr. Hizrot his home was purchased by the McKeesport Fraternal Order of Eagles. They attached an auditorium to the home in the 1920s, and operated the Aerie 285 lodge into the mid-1980s. In 1991 the home was obtained by Museum Hair Institute and used as a salon and beauty school for a short period of time.

Sadly, after years of abandonment, and no upkeep the mansion was demolished on July 21, 2014. Unfortunately with no artifacts from the home being saved.
